Owensboro Writers

Owensboro Writers is now a Google Group as well as on Yahoo! . This way, you may join chats with AIM Messenger and/or Google Chat . I plan to have a "chat room" open during our meetings on the third Wednesday of every month. Just look for tjpinkston (on Yahoo!, look for jewel_ammons) and IM me.

Please join one of these groups and tell me what YOU want to see and/or do. Here are some ideas I've thought of:

• monthly newsletter with meeting notes and other writing-related items
• weekly or daily writing prompts
  
• monthly assignments -- number of words and/or certain subject(s)
  
• weekly or bi-weekly chats instead of just monthly

My Writers' Group

I formed a writers' group in March 2008. It has become known as Owensboro Writers or Owensboro Writers' Group because I live in Owensboro, KY. Now, I've decided to put it online -- on Yahoo! Groups. Check the "Join" button on the left if you're interested in any aspect of writing. Make a Yahoo Msgr. ID if you don't already have one and join us. We'll have discussions/forums, chats, links and more.

If you live in or near Owensboro, KY , please join us at our monthly meetings at Books-A-Million on Frederica Street. We meet at 6:30 PM on the third Wednesday. And, if you can't join us in person, I will have a chat open on Yahoo! Messenger.

Today, I decided to research Lynard Skynard, #1 or #2 of my favorite rock groups. I wrote the following on www.sunshineguestbooks.com/guestbook.php?id=nashvillepa

Message	:	Terrific memorial. I fell in love with Lynard Skynard in 1978, in late April or early May. I was in Louisville, KY at a hotel I don't even remember the name of. But, there must have been a talent contest because an awesome band played, "Sweet Home Alabama." The song and deep bass rocked my very soul. Because I was raised with country and gospel music, I think this was the first ROCK song I saw being played on a stage. I know most people think of "Freebird" when they remember Lynard Skynard. But, for me, "Sweet Home Alabama" will always be my rock anthem. It wasn't until much later that I found out about the plane crash. I often wish that I could just go to Alabama and see the area(s) they sing about, and then find Ronnie's grave and lay some flowers on it.

Journals, Planners, etc.

I love journals and planners/organizers. Heck, I even crave notebooks and binders/trappers. My problem is that I'm addicted. Yes, addicted.

You're probably thinking, what's wrong with that? It isn't drugs or booze, right? Well, what's wrong is that I have too many. My last count of journals and wirebound notebooks was between 15 and 25. I own four planners for 2009. Plus notebooks and/or binders with closing rings number 6 or 7.

Still don't see a problem? Where do I put them all? Most of them are in boxes in closets. A few of them are on a bookshelf, but there's not much room left there. So, where do you suggest?

Goodbye, Purrie.

On Nov. 11, I had to say "Goodbye" to my oldest cat, above. Her name is Purrmeister -- Purrie for short. She had been sick and I took her to the veterinarian that morning. The doctor said that she had Feline Infectious Peritonitis or FIP. This disease has a 100% mortality rate and she would have only lasted 2-3 more days anyway.

Therefore, we had her euthanized and said our goodbyes. I couldn't even stay back there with her without breaking down. My husband stayed while they gave her a tranquilizer and he said that she went to sleep peacefully.

We miss her terribly and sometimes expect to see her sleeping on our bed or dashing out the door. I've cried a lot and still tear up, even as I'm writing this.

Dear Sen. Obama,

I'm writing to wish you good luck in the election and to give you a piece of advice:

Invest in a Kevlar suit (or other bullet proof attire)!

Now, don't get me wrong. I mean you no harm and I think a majority of people like and/or respect you. But I and thousands of others are afraid for you. An article written on Oct. 19 in the Los Angeles time talks about African-Americans being afraid that you won't be elected and if you are, they fear for your life. I and many other whites are also afraid. There are videos that have bigoted white folks calling for you to be shot. And unfortunately, there are some that would do the shooting.

Look at the deaths of John and Robert Kennedy and, of course, at the death of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. All of them were standing for equal rights. Secret Service Agents were not able to protect the Kennedy's and I'm sure Rev. King had his own security.

Therefore, I say again: Buy a Kevlar suit or some other bulletproof attire complete with helmet! Don't go anywhere without it! When you were in Nashville, TN, my husband and I were asking if you had a lead lined suit on and we were only half-way joking.

I hope and pray that you do get elected AND that you stay safe, but just in case ....

Caution - Construction

```Whew```, constructing a website is hard work, especially when I have so many other things to distract me!!

But, I came to realize that I've only put one or two pieces of my own writing on this Blog. I'm going to correct that. The next few posts will be uploads or copies of my writing along with a note about what stage it's in (rough draft, first revision, etc.).

Secondly, I'm going to put up more links for other writers and writing sites. After all, I can put other stuff on my website as I'm ```sweating``` over it's construction.

An object that can be . . . held in your hands.

It's a rather old book, but still in decent shape. The cover feels a little rough and some of its pages have been written on. The story inside was one of my son's favorites when he was little. I read it to him over and over again.
